Here are the key winners – with the full list of winners and their findings on the Auto Express site.
Car of the Year 2015: Volvo XC90
12 years since the first generation model took the crown, the new Volvo XC90 is the 2015 Auto Express Car of the Year. Thanks to stunning good looks, crisp design, flawless quality and stunning hi-tech features. Auto Express has found that it’s seven seater layout is a great drive too and enjoys well weighted steering and impressive safety kit as well as composed handling. Here comes the science bit – the flagship T8, which incorporates plug-in technology and a 2.0-litre petrol to deliver 401bhp, 134.5mpg and 49g/km.
Supermini of the Year 2015: Volkswagen Polo
(Mazda 2 and Skoda Fabia commended)
A closely fought category finds Polo scooping the honours thanks to upmarket quality, grown-up driving manners and range of efficient yet responsive engines. Inside the dash now enjoys the same infotainment touchscreen as the Golf, giving the cabin an edge for user-friendliness to complement its soft-touch plastics and high-quality switchgear. Add to that it’s refined comfort on the road, polished dynamics, suspension which soaks up bumps with grace and plenty of grip on those corners, Auto Express found it was “enjoyable to drive, thanks in part to the punchy delivery of its petrol and diesel turbos”
Family Car of the Year 2015 – Skoda Superb
(Mazda 6 and VW Passat commended)
Aptly named, the Skoda’s charge upmarket continues and the result is stylish, refined with, Auto Express explains, a combination of great design, quality and price putting it ahead of its closest rival. Design tweaks have paid off, the cabin feels slicker and with a choice of petrol engines the 148bhp 2.0 TDI is the pick – the magazine has found that it has “plenty of torque and strong efficiency for a car this big”. Agility wins through too – being 75kg lighter than before.
Green Car of the Year 2015 – BMW i3
(Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Peugeot 208 BlueHDi commended)
Two years on the trot for BMW meaning that the city runabout stays at the cutting edge of technology in the electric car stakes with Auto Express finding it easily one of the most user friendly electric cars on the market. Spacious, thanks to clever packaging and back doors being rear hinged, efficient thanks to skinny tyres making it nimble around town.
